Bookbinding Tutorials on DVD By Michael Chrisman

Volume 4 The Restoration and Reback of a 1728 "Cambridge" Binding

bookbinding tutorial

Fine rebacking and the historically correct restoration of early books has long been a troublesome aspect of the craft for many binders. Not least in the lifting of their typically very tight spines. In these bookbinding tutorials I show my technique in lifting tight spines [in one piece] as well as a host of other rebacking and restoration points, bringing this former "orphan" of a book to a beautifully restored state.

The book treated in this new book binding tutorial was in deplorable condition. The paste-downs had completely lifted over time, the boards detached, a loose end-band, the original leather turn-ins were loose, and so on. I perform ALL of the work ENTIRELY on camera. Nearly FOUR hours of full (well edited) instruction. This series of book binding tutorials is now in it's 12th year, and numbers six (6) volumes. ALL volumes are edited down to the "meat" of the instruction, and contain no "quiet times" or "unnecessary" filming. The list of happy, satisfied customers numbers into the many HUNDREDS of people. Our videos are professionally produced (Memory Central Videos, SLC, Utah) and a pleasure to view!

I know from my own experience that a week long residential bookbinding course in our neck of the woods costs from £350 - £450, and for that you learn only a few bookbinding techniques, this library of tutorials teaches you many dozens of essential & useful techniques, all of which are available for instant replay.

I received my equipment. Wow, the quality is astounding I don't know where in the states I could get tools made this well. The large laying press and finishing press are massive and the sewing frame is to die for. I guess old world craftmanship still lives. I am glad I bought from you instead of buying in America just to get it fast. To have the equipment (made and) delivered within 30 days was not too long to wait. Frank

I received the type holder yesterday, it actually arrived quicker than I thought it would.
Thank you for all your help and for the great customer service, really appreciate it. Bruno

The DVD's arrived last week and I have been glued to the tv screen. I have been busy sharpening my knives the way the DVD teaches, and it works! Great to have really sharp knives. Mac

Just a thank you for your excellent tutorial on clasp making -wonderful. Thanks so much. You're really generous to share your knowledge and skill with us youngsters. Tony

The equipment arrived safe and sound, it looks wonderful I can't wait to try it. Thank you for being so helpful. Louise

The article on calf marbling was awesome, when you get around to publishing your book, put me down for a copy. Jake

I just wanted to say thank you for being so patient with me over my choice of bookbinding press, so nice not to be subjected to the hard sell. Mary
