Book Binders Finishing Tools

book binders finishing tools

Hand Tools are deeply engraved on hard brass, with extra thick heads for better heat retention.

The outside forms are cut closely to the design in order to improve sighting.

All of these finishing tools have a domed face which greatly aids "putting the tool down", whilst giving more "life" to the binding than a flat tool can.

The catalogue (see below) contains over 1300 designs, though not in strictly chronological order they have been grouped in similar types, to make comparison and selection easier.

There is a selection of intaglio finishing tools for blind tooling, and some interesting Art Nouveau tools and authentic Napoleonic designs. The corner tools are arranged on a double page and are shown in pairs to help visualise centre designs that can be built up.

All tools can be enlarged. Special designs and exact copies for restoration can be made from artworks, good photocopies, photographs, slides, original bindings or fragments of leather. A quotation will be given on sight of artwork.

Gouges are made from the same hard brass as our hand tools and are cut from 5mm thick sheet.

The gouges are then formed to the required curves before machining, this produces better sighting than traditional cast gouges.

Gouges are sold as a set of 12, a set of 5 semi circle, or 4 circle gouges. For more aesthetic tooling our set of 40 designer gouges and 7 blending gouges are ideal, these are also available as half set of 20 or they may be supplied individually (as can all tools).

Pallets are finished flat on the sighting side with a long bevel on the reverse.

They are supplied with a 9 inch arc as standard, but can be made flat if required.

Pallets come in sets of 10, either single line, double line or thick and thin line, they can also be purchased individually.

Unless other wise requested all single line pallets and gouges are made with a 1.5 point (0.20 inch/ .5mm) line thickness, also available with mitred ends.

In the catalogue you will also find details concerning the making of brass dies and also tools intended for the binder of miniature books.

Here you can download a copy of the Hand Tools/Gouges and Pallets catalogue. The catalogue is in .pdf format and you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader or similar to read it. You can download Adobe Acrobat here for free if you do not have it, it is a perfectly safe, widely used software for reading .pdf files.

The catalogue has been scanned at quite a high resolution in order that it may be printed out and none of the fine detail of the tools lost. Because of this the catalogue may take a few minutes to appear in your browser, if you still have a dial up connection I suggest going away and making a cup of coffee, if you have broadband it should only take a minute or two.

Just click the link below and a window will open in your browser, wait a few minutes and the catalogue will load, then it can be saved to your PC.

bookbinding

I received my equipment. Wow, the quality is astounding I don't know where in the states I could get tools made this well. The large laying press and finishing press are massive and the sewing frame is to die for. I guess old world craftmanship still lives. I am glad I bought from you instead of buying in America just to get it fast. To have the equipment (made and) delivered within 30 days was not too long to wait. Frank

I received the type holder yesterday, it actually arrived quicker than I thought it would.
Thank you for all your help and for the great customer service, really appreciate it. Bruno

The DVD's arrived last week and I have been glued to the tv screen. I have been busy sharpening my knives the way the DVD teaches, and it works! Great to have really sharp knives. Mac

Just a thank you for your excellent tutorial on clasp making -wonderful. Thanks so much. You're really generous to share your knowledge and skill with us youngsters. Tony

The article on calf marbling was awesome, when you get around to publishing your book, put me down for a copy. Jake

I just wanted to say thank you for being so patient with me over my choice of bookbinding press, so nice not to be subjected to the hard sell. Mary
