Mentoring

My name is Richard Norman, I am 58 years old, married with an adolescent daughter. We live in South West France.

mentoring

I qualified as a bookbinder after attending a two-year full time City & Guilds course at  Brunel College, Bristol.

i passed out with distinctions in 7 of the 8 elements in the qualification.

We were then asked to set up a bindery by the monks at Downside Abbey in Somerset.

My wife and I ran this bindery, together with a fine printing facility and paper marbling studio, for nearly 25 years before moving to France for a better quality of life and education for our daughter.

Prior to the closing of the workshops they had been voted a National Living Treasure for the workshops contribution to the book arts.

So I feel I speak as a mature, qualified & experienced craftsman.

For the past few years I have been offering mentoring to people interested in the craft of bookbinding and its allied trades.

This mentoring, or one on one help and advice, will take the form that  suits you, whether you need help finding a teacher, or suggestions about learning at home, if you need equipment or materials I undertake to put you in touch with those offering the best value for money.

I help to clear away any misconceptions about the craft of bookbinding and bring you greater understanding.

I try to take you from where you are in relation to the craft of bookbinding, to where you would like to be.

To become a competent bookbinder requires effort, it will stretch you and ask things of you.

But there is no doubt of the personal rewards to be obtained from pursuing this ancient craft.

For this  service we ask only £15.00 for a one month period.

You can cancel your subscription at any time.

EVERY MONTH I SEND OUT THE BOOKBINDERS DIGEST. WHICH AIMS TO BRING YOU INTERESTING ITEMS CONCERNING THE WORLD OF BOOKBINDING AND RELATED CRAFTS. IF YOU WOULD CARE TO SUBSCRIBE PLEASE JUST MAIL ME PUTTING "EDEN" IN THE SUBJECT LINE.

I received my equipment. Wow, the quality is astounding I don't know where in the states I could get tools made this well. The large laying press and finishing press are massive and the sewing frame is to die for. I guess old world craftmanship still lives. I am glad I bought from you instead of buying in America just to get it fast. To have the equipment (made and) delivered within 30 days was not too long to wait. Frank

I received the type holder yesterday, it actually arrived quicker than I thought it would.
Thank you for all your help and for the great customer service, really appreciate it. Bruno

The DVD's arrived last week and I have been glued to the tv screen. I have been busy sharpening my knives the way the DVD teaches, and it works! Great to have really sharp knives. Mac

Just a thank you for your excellent tutorial on clasp making -wonderful. Thanks so much. You're really generous to share your knowledge and skill with us youngsters. Tony

I had to write and thank you for your help during the last month, you guided me to a teacher near me and now I am actualy enroled on a 1 year part time bookbinding course. Thank you so much for your efforts. Ratchel

The equipment arrived safe and sound, it looks wonderful I can't wait to try it. Thank you for being so helpful. Louise

The article on calf marbling was awesome, when you get around to publishing your book, put me down for a copy. Jake

I just wanted to say thank you for being so patient with me over my choice of bookbinding press, so nice not to be subjected to the hard sell. Mary
