bookbinding techniques in a structured and comprehensive way.
'Hand Bookbinding 1' is for beginners and offers an
introduction to the craft through a series of projects. 'Hand
Bookbinding 2' offers the opportunity to consolidate knowledge
of the subject and to develop individual skills and creativity.
Courses '3'and '4' are for those who have completed
introductory courses or already have a good grounding in
bookbinding who wish to continue their studies at a more
advanced level. Evening classes cater for mixed ability
students on Mondays, with a new evening class for intermediate
and advanced students starting in September 2002 on Tuesdays.

range of courses leading to a BA (Hons) degree and
various graduate certificates in book arts and crafts and
craft bookbinding.
Undergraduate courses includes a three-year BA course in Book
Arts and Crafts. Graduate Certificates in Bookbinding and Book
Restoration and Book Arts and Crafts. Graduate certificates are
a range of new courses at the LCC. These courses are
specifically designed for students who already have a first
degree and wish to progress to a post-graduate course but need
a bridging programme to build confidence and skills, or
alternatively wish to pursue a more specialist or intensive
skills course in an area related to your first degree. This
programme aims to prepare students for career opportunities
within freelance practice in binding and repairing books, and
in other areas of book production. Opportunities also exist for
students to set and run their own bindery or work in libraries
or as a book archival or restoration specialist. Although a
highly specialised area of craft practice there is evidence of
growing need for practitioners in book and archive restoration
and storage.
Part-time evening courses of approximately fourteen weeks
duration are also held throughout the year on various aspects
of bookbinding and book arts. Subjects include 'Introduction to
Craft Bookbinding', 'Intermediate Craft Bookbinding', 'Advanced
Craft Bookbinding', 'Introduction to Creative Bookbinding',
'Conservation Binding Techniques', 'Conservation of Library

structured course devoted to the craft of bookbinding as

Book Arts (PgDip and MA Courses)
Full-time and part-time postgraduate courses in Book Arts. In
the PgDip course which runs for thirty weeks full-time,
students develop skills in areas such as printmaking,
reprographics and computers and have the opportunity to
investigate narrative structures, image, text and how they
relate and carry meaning. The MA courses which runs for one
year full-time or two years part-time offers the opportunity to
sustain and develop a project from proposal to final
exhibition.
